Speaking at an international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty, Federal Minister for Climate Change Mosaddiq Malik said that Pakistan faced devastating floods, this is not an environmental issue, it is a matter of justice, the livelihood of a large section of the population in Pakistan is agriculture, the real issue is to control water and use it as a weapon.
Mosaddiq Malik said that Pakistan has made it clear that it will not compromise on its share of water, the Indus Waters Treaty is one of the strongest agreements in the world, no one can be allowed to take regional peace or global peace hostage, farmers are being forced to abandon agriculture due to the lack of water, not only Pakistanis but also the people of Bangladesh are being affected by the lack of water.
The Federal Minister said that be it the Nile or the Euphrates, there are similar stories everywhere, Pakistan, Africa or Bangladesh, there are similar stories everywhere, India not only does not control the flow of our water, but it is also the third largest polluter in the world. 6,000 people do not die even in wars, but because of India, 6,000 of our people have died and thousands have been injured.
He said that the Indus Water Treaty remained intact even in three wars between two neighboring countries. If this strongest agreement does not remain intact, then no agreement in the world can remain intact. The International Court of Arbitration has given very clear decisions. The International Court of Arbitration has declared that no country can unilaterally suspend or terminate the Indus Water Treaty. The arbitration court has declared that India cannot build water reservoirs on the waters of Pakistan.
Mosaddiq Malik said that India also refuses to accept the decisions of the International Court of Arbitration. If this agreement is not successful, then the water of every low-lying country in the world will be stopped.
