Hundreds of people have died and more than 1,000 are still missing after a massive avalanche of snow, mud and rocks fell into a river in the Nepal-China border area.
According to Nepali authorities, 359 people have died so far in the incident, while dozens of bodies have been swept away by the floodwaters to the plains, from where they are being retrieved.
Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung said that all attention is focused on the search for survivors, with rescue teams searching for 100 missing Indian nationals and 25 Chinese workers in the vicinity of the worst-hit area, Trishuli.
About 550 foreigners are still missing, while Nepali authorities have not yet been able to determine the final number of missing locals.
Meanwhile, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday that the number of missing people in Tibet’s Gyerong County has reached 558, including 260 foreign nationals.
