The Central Power Purchasing Agency has submitted a formal request to NEPRA to increase electricity prices by Rs 2.52 per unit as part of the July fuel price adjustment. According to a NEPRA statement, the hearing on this request has been scheduled for August 27 and if this increase is approved, it will impose an additional financial burden of Rs 41 billion on consumers, including GST. The request submitted by CPPA has presented a detailed statement of various costs incurred on electricity generation during July. CCPA has stated that 10.78 percent of electricity was generated from imported LNG in July, which cost Rs 47.37 per unit, and a total of Rs 77.19 billion was spent on this. Similarly, 1.42 percent of electricity was generated from furnace oil at the rate of Rs 50.7 per unit, while electricity generated from furnace oil cost Rs 10.77 billion.
In addition, 31 million units of electricity were generated from diesel at a high price of Rs 54.47 per unit. During July, 10.10 percent of electricity was obtained from nuclear sources at a cost of Rs 3.2 per unit.
Furthermore, the share of hydropower in the total electricity generation in July was recorded at 39.81 percent, local coal at 10.91 percent and imported coal at 14.38 percent.
After analyzing all these data and the cost of electricity, the NEPRA authority will take a final decision regarding the new prices in the hearing to be held on August 27.
