Tissue biopsy is a safe and highly effective procedure for diagnosing unusual lumps, kidney diseases, liver disorders, and other internal health conditions in children. Parents should not be intimidated by the procedure but should instead focus on timely diagnosis and treatment. These views were shared by renowned Pediatric Radiologist Dr. Qaiser Mahmood of Children’s Hospital Lahore in a special public awareness message.
Dr. Qaiser Mahmood explained that a tissue biopsy involves obtaining a small sample of tissue from the affected area, which is then examined in a laboratory to accurately determine the nature and severity of the disease. According to him, a biopsy does not cause a disease to spread or worsen; rather, it serves as the first and most important step toward an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
He further stated that with modern radiological guidance, particularly ultrasound and CT scan imaging, biopsy procedures have become extremely safe, precise, and minimally invasive. This advanced approach helps avoid unnecessary surgeries and reduces the risk of complications for pediatric patients.
Dr. Qaiser Mahmood has been successfully performing biopsies of the kidneys, liver, and various tumors in children for the past 25 years at Children’s Hospital Lahore. He noted that throughout his extensive experience, thousands of children have benefited from timely and accurate diagnoses, enabling them to receive appropriate treatment and achieve better health outcomes.
He urged parents not to be influenced by misconceptions and myths surrounding biopsies and to place their trust in qualified medical professionals. According to Dr. Mahmood, timely biopsy not only facilitates a definitive diagnosis but also helps physicians develop the most suitable targeted treatment plan for each child, paving the way for a healthier and safer future.
