According to a statement issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board, the ongoing Test against New Zealand in Nottingham will be the last match of his career. Ben Stokes informed his fellow cricketers of the decision before the start of the game today.
Ben Stokes did not rule out the possibility that this could be his last Test during the press conference before the third Test at Trent Bridge.
Ben Stokes’ 15-year international career and 4-year Test captaincy for England are coming to an end.
He played his first T20 for England in 2011, while his Test debut was made during the Ashes series in Adelaide in December 2013 and he has been leading the England Test team since April 2022.
Ben Stokes has played 121 Tests for England, scoring 7,228 runs and taking 246 wickets. He has played 114 One-Day Internationals, scoring 3,463 runs and taking 74 wickets. He has scored 585 runs and taken 26 wickets in 43 T20Is.
Stokes’ decision comes after he was ruled out of the second Test at The Oval due to an ongoing investigation into a late-night celebration at a Chelsea nightclub following the victory at Lord’s. He was given a written warning after an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Cricket Regulator, but was cleared of any further misconduct or wrongdoing, although he faced heavy criticism.
