A participant in the popular British reality show “Married at First Sight UK” was arrested on charges of alleged sexual assault and sexual abuse of female participants during the show.
This development came after the BBC Panorama investigative report was aired, which revealed serious allegations of sexual assault.
According to the British broadcasting organization BBC, the identity of the arrested person was not disclosed for legal reasons, while the names of the alleged victims were also kept confidential under the Privacy Act.
What were the revelations in the Panorama investigation?
In the BBC Panorama investigation aired in May this year, two women participating in the show made allegations of rape, while the third woman claimed that she had sex without consent.
According to the report, the male contestant who was accused denied all the allegations and declared himself innocent.
How did the police proceed with the investigation?
After the Panorama program was broadcast, the Metropolitan Police appealed to all those who participated in the show who consider themselves victims of sexual assault or abuse to contact them.
Police confirmed in a recent statement that a man had been arrested on suspicion of rape, but after initial inquiries he has been released on bail while the investigation continues.
Police have not yet formally charged the arrested man, while he will be presumed innocent in the eyes of the law until the investigation is complete.
Police added that the case is sensitive and therefore no further details can be released at this stage.
Channel Four’s response
British TV channel Channel 4, which broadcasts the show, temporarily removed all episodes of the reality show from its streaming service after the allegations emerged.
The broadcaster has also ordered an independent review into the welfare of those participating in the show. The review is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.
However, Channel 4 has said that only a summary of the findings will be released rather than a full report.
Uncertainty over new season
The new season of the show has already been recorded, but Channel 4 has not yet decided whether it will be broadcast at the scheduled time.
Production company’s position
Independent production company CPL Productions, which produces the show, had previously said in a statement issued through its lawyers that its system for the safety and mental and physical well-being of those participating in the show is the “gold standard” and is considered one of the best in the industry.
