According to a foreign news agency, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an audio message sent to journalists after the attack, “We do not want this war, we have never wanted war and everyone knows it, but if Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn too.”
Flames and clouds of smoke were seen in the densely populated southeastern area of Kaputnia after the attack in Moscow, where the refinery that supplies fuel to the capital is located.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 555 drones were shot down across the country, of which 180 were destroyed around Moscow alone. According to the state news agency, the attack was one of the largest attacks this year.
Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed the attack on the refinery, while the Ukrainian military said that an oil depot and two bridges in the southern Russian region of Rostov were also targeted.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said several drones managed to reach the refinery, while a shopping center also suffered minor damage.
A high-rise residential building, an industrial facility and several private homes were damaged in the Moscow suburbs, while 16 people were injured in the attack.
Flights were suspended at all Moscow airports after the attack and traffic was also stopped on the highway near the refinery, while the city’s busiest airport, Sheremetyevo, was evacuated.
